Ground Investigation 2 – Interpretation for Design

Book a Course

Ground investigation is an essential part of any construction project.  The objectives of a Ground investigation must be clearly defined according to the nature of the project and its Ground.  The investigation must be designed and executed appropriately so that it will yield the quantity and quality information on ground and ground water conditions necessary for economic design and construction.

The course explains the approach to designing a Ground investigation and explains how a Ground investigation is carried out with different in situ tests and sampling methods, followed by a discussion of laboratory tests and interpretation of results.  The course will be based mainly on BS 5930: 2015 Code of practice for Ground investigations and Eurocode 7.

AIMS & OBJECTIVES:

The course aims to give civil engineers, geotechnical engineers, engineering geologists and others who process ground investigation data for design a practical understanding of the techniques available, the use of the Geotechnical Investigation Report (GIR) as the basis for the design recommendations and the presentation of the results.

COURSE OUTLINE:

  • A review of Ground investigation procedure – from Ground Investigation 1 course
  • A discussion of Ground investigation data presentation and processing for design
  • Determination of characteristic geotechnical design parameters and associated partial factors
  • Selection of design parameters for specific design situations and methods of design – Ultimate Limit State, Servicability Limit State, FEM or FDM methods
  • Identification of geotechnical risks and their management
  • Discussion on reporting initial GDR, Geotechnical Feedback, Geotechnical input for maintenance

MODE OF DELIVERY:

The course will be delivered through:

  • Presentation on the basic principles on each topic
  • Interactive exercises following each topic
  • Open discussion
  • Feedback Activity

BENEFITS OF ATTENDING:

On completion of this course, delegates will be able to:

  • Understand the factual data presented in the GIR
  • Understand the derivation of characteristic geotechnical parameters for use in design as defined in BSEN 1997-1 cl 2.4.5.2
  • Understand the application of various laboratory and in situ testing results to design
  • Determine the design parameters required for the design of:
    • Foundations
    • Piles and Anchors
    • Earthworks – cuttings, fills including reinforced fills
    • Retaining walls and abutments
    • Tunnels
  • Appreciate ground risks
  • Plan the suppervison of the works and testing required during and after construction
  • Plan the contents of the Geotechnical Design Report (GDR)

INTENDED FOR:

Civil Engineers, Geotechnical Engineers, Engineering Geologists and others who carry out Geotechnical designs.
